Joseph Diaz and Luis Campas filed a 20-count, 51-page complaint against twelve defendants, alleging that one defendant issued a bad check and that the other defendants retaliated against them by revoking their boxing licenses after they sought prosecution. Diaz is a boxing trainer, while Campas is a boxer. The district court dismissed the case under Rule 12(b)(6) of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure. Diaz and Campas subsequently appealed the decision. Jurisdiction for the appeal is established under 28 U.S.C. § 1291. The appellate court reviewed the case de novo and affirmed the district court's ruling for the reasons provided in its decision.
